Animal Planet and Firmament

This story always made me suspicious, but I find the new development terribly sad.

I reconnected the hamster cages. Bacardi is just a big bully, but the girls seem happier with more room to roam around. Even if “happy” is kind of relative with rodents. We caught another mouse this morning, and the hypocrisy of killing some rodents but building elaborate cages and buying special treats for rodents who are, genetically, not that different still bothers me. It’s also sort of funny that I play with the hamsters and Amanda doesn’t, but I refuse to touch the dead mice and she’ll do it. It’s not a pretty scene when my hamsters die.

Browsing in the cat/dog bed section, I noticed that Benson’s now sells pet beds made by the Orthodox nuns of New Skete. (They also make $40 cheesecakes that are apparently quite wonderful. I really need to make a trip out there one of these weekends. Not necessarily to buy a cheesecake, or a dog.)

I find this very funny for some reason–the monks’ puppies have a waiting list like you wouldn’t believe, and their own TV show, but you can buy what they sleep on! They’re very soft beds, and clearly handmade, not nothing really special. I’d get one for Maggie, but she doesn’t really like dog beds.
